It is really good to have a career in publishing nowadays. Publishing copy-editors and proofreaders ensure that texts due for publication are well written and they have to be grammatically correct too. Publishers work on a huge set of stuff like books, journals, magazines and stuff which they publish.

Many may be required to correct basic spelling and other typographical errors (proofreading), or even have to check facts and the consistency of style whether one of following styles like the Chicago style of the APA. They might even have to undertake significant rewriting something like copy-editing. Some publishers who are working with IT-based publishing systems have to excel in understanding broad IT terminologies and facts. They also have to start liaising regularly with authors and publishers for the new stuff. They usually select a genre of style for their publications. They can even resolve queries directly with the author about any inconsistencies that might be there. If there is some designing to be done with respect to coding manuscripts especially for hierarchy of headings; he has the right to instruct the production team. He has to be careful about the concepts and even while issuing illustrations for a particular subject. He or she has to check whether the illustrations are correctly captioned and titled.

He or she should be updated with the latest language in vogue and the changes creeping in the styles of writing so that they are better versed with the needs of the market. They even have to retrieve articles from their collection and issue reprints on demands. Most of the work while publishing a work like preparing preliminary pages for the title, contents etc., is done by the publisher. The career of the publisher is different in different places in US. They even have to oversee the work of indexers, typesetters and designers and also advise the typesetting and designing layout.
